Field Care Tips for Animals (Small Mammals)

Animals, coyote sized or smaller, should not be skinned unless by a professional. Don't field dress the animal. Small mammals, especially carnivores, will spoil quickly because of the hide and bacteria. If you can't take the the small game animal immediately to a taxidermist, as soon as the carcass cools completely, put it in a plastic bag and freeze it.  With the chance of rabies take every safety precaution necessary when handling your game.
When you are ready to deliver your game to the taxidermist, do not thaw the animal. If you are traveling a long distant, place the animal in a large cooler or wrap tightly in a blanket.
